Day 1

The ideas the week uses

Tiago Forte argues that our heads are for having ideas, not storing them. A trusted digital system for notes, which he calls a second brain, frees your mind and helps you turn what you consume into work you create.

  1. Capture what resonates. Don't save everything. Save what surprises, inspires, or is useful to you, and keep it in one trusted place.
  2. Organize by action, not topic. Forte's PARA method sorts notes into Projects, Areas, Resources, and Archives, based on how soon you'll use them. Projects come first because they have deadlines.
  3. Distill to the essence. Progressive summarization means highlighting the key points of a note in layers, so you can grasp it quickly when you return to it.
  4. Express what you know. The point of collecting is to create: reports, posts, decisions. Forte suggests sharing small pieces of work early and often.
  5. Intermediate packets. Break work into small reusable pieces, like an outline, a slide, a paragraph, or notes from a meeting. They're easier to finish and to reuse later.

Where it overreachesThe system can become a hobby of its own, and Forte's approach suits digital tools and project-based work more than other kinds of jobs.

Set up PARA

Today’s action · 10 to 20 minutes

Create four folders, Projects, Areas, Resources, and Archives, and sort your notes into them.

How

Projects have a goal and a deadline. Areas are ongoing responsibilities like health or finances. Resources are topics of interest. Archives are anything inactive. Move each note to the folder where you'll next use it.

Why this one

Forte's PARA method organizes by how soon you'll act, which makes notes easier to find when they matter.

If today is a bad day

Create the four folders and move one note into Projects.
