Atomic Habits action plan: 7 days, one small action a day

This Atomic Habits action plan turns James Clear’s book into seven short days. Day 1 starts with the core ideas, in two minutes. On days 2 to 7 you do one 10–20 minute action a day: score your habits, pick an identity, stack a new habit, change your space, start a tracker and plan for bad days.

The 7 days

Day 1Read the summary. A short email that starts with the core ideas the week uses. Start with the Key Ideas guide (it comes with your free week, below).Read the Key Ideas summary (about two minutes).Start with the core ideas, in two minutes
Day 2Make a list of what you already do. Write down every habit you do on a normal weekday, from waking to sleep, and mark each with +, – or =.Write down the first five things you did this morning and mark each +, – or =.Key Idea 4: A specific plan beats a good intention (the Habits Scorecard)
Day 3Decide who, then pick one vote. Write one sentence that starts “I am the type of person who…” and choose the smallest daily action that proves it.Finish the sentence “I am the type of person who…” in your phone’s notes.Key Idea 2: Lasting change starts with who you want to become
Day 4Write the when and where. Attach your two-minute habit to something you already do every day, and write it as one sentence.Write the sentence “After I ___, I will ___” and stick it where the anchor happens.Key Idea 4: A specific plan beats a good intention (habit stacking)
Day 5Change one thing in the room. Rearrange one space so the good habit is easier to start and one bad habit is harder.Move one object: put the cue for your new habit where you’ll see it first thing tomorrow.Key Idea 5: Your environment shapes your behavior more than your motivation does
Day 6Start a tracker. Make a simple habit tracker for the next 30 days and mark today.Draw a row of seven boxes on a sticky note and fill in the first one.Key Idea 10: Immediate rewards make habits stick, but keep tracking honest

What to do if you miss a day

Do the two-minute version, or pick the day up tomorrow. Each day’s email stays in your inbox, so nothing is lost. Clear’s rule is never to miss twice: one missed day is an accident, but two in a row starts a new pattern. That’s why day 7 has you write the smallest version of your habit, the one you’d still do while sick, traveling or behind.

Questions

Do I need to have read Atomic Habits first?

No. The free Key Ideas guide covers the book’s main ideas in 15 to 20 minutes of reading, and day 1 starts with the core ideas the week uses. The plan works if you never opened the book. It also works if you finished it last night.

How long does each day take?

Ten to twenty minutes. Every day also has a two-minute version for busy or bad days.

What’s in the free Key Ideas guide?

A 16-page PDF with the book’s 12 Key Ideas, each tied to a story or study from the book, plus a one-page summary, two worksheets and a cheat sheet. The first worksheet is a habits scorecard and identity page, which pairs with days 2 and 3.

What is the two-minute version?

It comes from Clear’s Two-Minute Rule: a new habit should take under two minutes to start. Each day’s two-minute version keeps you moving on days when the full action won’t fit.

Can I print this plan?

Yes. Use “Print this plan” at the top of the page for a one-page copy to keep on your desk or fridge.

How do I stop the emails?

Every email has a one-click link to stop.
